Water Fluoridation and the Environment: Current Perspective in the United States HOWARD F. POLLICK, BDS, MPH Evidence of water fluoridation’s effects on plants, ani mals, and humans is considered based on reviews by sci entific groups and individual communities, including Fort Collins, CO, Port Angeles, WA, and Tacoma-Pierce County, WA. The long term effects of chlorinated drinking water have just recently being recognized. According to the U.S. Council Of Environmental Quality, “Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.”.

Effects of residual chlorine on aquatic life William A. Brungs The present emphasis on environ mental preservation and human health is resulting in an increased use of chlorine for disinfection and waste treat ment. Few efforts, if any, are being made by those proposing such procedures to de termine the adverse impact of increased usage.   And only chlorine-based disinfectants, including chloramine, provide large-scale residual protection from the drinking water treatment plant to the tap. Chlorine is intentionally added and carefully regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) to safeguard public health.

subsamples of river water samples collected near the WWTP outfalls were analyzed for chlorine periodically over a several-hour period.

In samples maintained in darkness and at constant temperature, concentrations consistently decreased according to first-order kinetics, indicating that the exertion of chlorine demand was a first-order process.
